Dr. Panayiota (Pani) Kendeou is a leading scholar on how people understand information, revise what they know, and learn in a world increasingly shaped by digital and AI technologies. She is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor and the Guy Bond Chair in Reading at the University of Minnesota, where she directs the Reading + Learning Lab and co-directs the CEHD Learning Informatics Lab.
Her work focuses on reading comprehension, misinformation, science of learning, AI literacy, and educational technology. Dr. Kendeou develops theoretical models and applies those models to the design and evaluation of innovative learning technologies, including AI-supported educational tools.
A central focus of her work is bridging research and practice. She collaborates with educators, researchers, and technology developers to translate findings from cognitive and learning sciences into scalable tools, interventions, and instructional approaches that support deeper learning and critical thinking.
Dr. Kendeou has published more than 150 scholarly articles and book chapters and has delivered over 300 presentations at national and international conferences. Her research has been supported by more than $17 million in federal funding and has been recognized with numerous awards.
She is the outgoing Editor of the Journal of Educational Psychology and is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA), the American Educational Research Association (AERA), and the Society for Text and Discourse (ST&D).
